The Barrier Island Educational Foundation, Inc. was incorporated as a nonprofit corporation on December 18, 2006, specifically for the purpose of motivating and helping children on the barrier islands of the coast of South Carolina to achieve academic excellence. The major thought behind its formation was to assist rural children with school supplies.
A significant number of these children who live on the islands and in other rural areas of coastal South Carolina, through no fault of their own, lack the means to secure basic school supplies. Many are at risk for not achieving educational and social success.
Every year since its inception, the Barrier Island Educational Foundation has bought supplies to be distributed to children of school age. Those efforts are principally located on Wadmalaw Island, Johns Island, and the St. George area. Recently, we have expanded our outreach to give a minimum of 100 families a large Christmas basket containing food items including a turkey or some other meat.
